Introduction
Hartington is situated in the south of the Peak District National Park, midway between Ashbourne and Buxton.
It lies 2 miles west of the A515 and half a mile east of the River Dove, at the head of Beresford Dale.
In the heart of the village lies the old market square, surrounded on all sides by the pub & hotel, post office, a number of gift & tea shops, and the village pond.
One of these shops is the Old Cheese Shop, which sells locally sourced cheese. The cheese factory, which used to supply the cheese, has now closed.
Hartington has a long illustrious history.
First mentioned in the Doomsday book as Hortedun, Hartington became an important trading centre and was granted a market charter in 1203.
Weekly markets and an annual fair were held for almost 700 years but went into decline around the turn of the 20th century.
